The District's Commitment to Safe Schools

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education, the administration, and staff are committed to creating a positive and safe learning environment for all students in all district schools. To ensure such an environment, the school district requires and models mutual respect, proper behavior, openness, and fairness, a goal implemented through our Safe School Plans.

Public Schools: Safe Havens for Our Students

Student safety is our No. 1 priority in Durango School District 9-R. Each has a crisis plan in place to address emergencies, and we conduct regular inspections of our schools to ensure that they offer safe environments for learning.

Our schools also offer comprehensive anti-bullying curricula to create an atmosphere of trust, respect, and responsibility among students.

Although school violence receives quite a bit of attention in the media, rest assured that schools are among the safest locations that your student can be during the day. In fact, students are more than twice as likely to become victims of serious violence away from school than they are at school, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Fire drills and lockdown practices

State law requires the school district to practice firs drills and other emergency procedures during the school year so that students know what to do should a dangerous incident occur during the school day.

During fire drills, students practice evacuation procedures under their teacher's directions. Lockdown drills teach students what to do when an emergency or threat warrants moving to a secured area. Teachers make every effort to keep students calm and informed during these drills. If your child has special needs during an emergency drill, please contact your school principal.
